describes the different courses offered at the middle school level. The course guide will be available on the RMS and district website. Summer Reading Requirement ALL students entering RMS grades 6,7, and 8 are required to complete a summer reading assignment. Students in both on level and PreAP RELA classes will choose a book from either the 2014-2015 Lone Star List or the 2015-2016 Lone Star List. An annotated version of the list will be available on the RMS Library website. During the first three weeks of school, all students will complete assignments related to their summer reading choice. Students are expected to adhere to the late work policy for any assignments
related to summer reading. If you have any questions regarding summer reading or need assistance obtaining a book for your child, please contact the RELA academic lead teacher or the librarian.. Intro to Engineering and Technology Foods for Today Journalism I Get an application from your RELA teacher and must be in the top 3 choices First, lets talk Prerequisites A PREREQUISITE is a course that must be taken before another course can be taken. Several 7th grade courses are prerequisites to
8th grade courses. In 7th grade, Beginning Art must be taken before Intermediate Art or Applied Arts and Crafts. Journalism requires an application that students pick up from their RELA teacher. Journalism I must be taken before a student can take Broadcast I and Journalism II. Theater I must be taken in 7th grade prior to Theater II. Exceptions to this is if your child wants to try out for Theater II they have to contact Mrs. Farmer and Mrs. Guseman to discuss the process. Intro to Spanish must be taken before Spanish I if the student does not have a 90 or above in Rela. Electives for High School Credit and their Prerequisites There are several courses that can be taken as an EIGHTH grader and you must take the

Rank in order 1 to 6, with 1 being the first choice and 6 being the 6th choice. There may be a conflict with another class that your child wants or the class may be full.

Health Theater 7 BandBand Physical Education vs. Athletics PE provides an overview of several sports and activities. Some examples are bowling, soccer, and basketball. Athletics allows for the opportunity to compete against the other middle schools in track, basketball, and volleyball for girls and football for boys and girls. You DO NOT have to be in athletics to try out for a sport but if you make the team, your schedule WILL change for you to go into
athletics. A little more about athletics Athletics lasts the entire school year. All students in athletics are required to dress out in an RMS athletic uniform & appropriate shoes EVERY day. Athletics is for those who wish to compete and work hard EVERYDAY. We consider athletics an accelerated-accelerated PE class or Pre AP PE. The expectations and activities are intense. If your child does not make a team, he or she will be in off season. 7th grade athletics is 1st period. If your child is on the team, they must be ready to participate at 7:00 AM for football and 7:30 AM for
volleyball, basketball, and track. Boys Athletics Football 1st semester (athletics all year) *There are no tryouts for football and if you sign up for athletics for the year, you will play football.* Basketball Can move into the course in November if you try out and make the team. Track 2nd semester (Can take PE in the fall and move into Athletics in the Spring) Soccer-
RMS does have a soccer team for boys and girls, but it is not a class. It is a club sport that takes place after school hours usually sometime in April and May. Girls Athletics Volleyball Tryouts are at the first week of school. Basketball Tryouts are after volleyball season around the first of November Track - Track season begins after basketball is over around February

If you would like to make a change from Onlevel to PreAP, please contact the teacher to discuss the change you would like to see.
Also, indicate the change on the card and sign. Teacher recommendation s are listed here. Off Campus PE Requires at least 5 hours of training, Monday-Friday. It does not include any training or games on Saturdays or Sundays. Students will select an additional elective in place of their school PE class. There is an application process in place, ending with approval at the district level. Parents can download the Off Campus PE forms on the district website. Processing requests for Off Campus PE for the upcoming school
year starts after spring break. The district recommends that the forms be turned into the counselor prior to May 9. If your child wants to do off campus PE and be on a Athletic team such as football, basketball or track for boys and volleyball, basketball or track for girls, they must take athletics at RMS since those sports require them to be in a class. Reading or Math Strategies If your child does not pass the Math STAAR and/or the Reading STAAR they will be placed in a strategies class. The strategies class will take the place of 2 one semester or one year long elective. The schedule may look like: Period 1st Semester 2nd Semester 1 Athletics

The verification sheet is not the same as a SCHEDULE. The verification sheet is just VERIFYING what your child is REQUESTING to have in their schedule.
If you see a class on the verification sheet that was not your childs top elective choices it is because there may be a conflict with another class that your child wants or the class may be full. And a message from our friendly school nurse Any student whose immunization is due during the summer OR the first semester of the new school year MUST update the immunization record prior to picking up the back-to-school packet in August.
Student Packet Pick-up August 4-6th for packet pick up. You may allow someone else to pick up and sign for your childs packet.
