Character Types STATIC: A character that DOES NOT undergo an important change Remains essentially the same at the end as he/she was at the beginning DYNAMIC: A character that DOES undergo an important change in the course of the story

These are not changes in circumstances, but changes in some sense WITHIN the character Changes in insight, understanding, commitment or values Change in the nature of the character Foil: A character in literature who highlights certain traits of the main character by contrasting

them. For example, a coward helps show the heros bravery in a stronger light. How is Parris, Putnam, or Giles a foil for Proctor? TRAGIC HERO A character caught up in a sequence of events that inevitably result in disaster

TRAGIC FLAW Character weakness that leads to their downfall WHAT IS PROCTORS TRAGIC FLAW? Tragic Hero Qualities 1. Person of high standing; an important individual

2. Undergoes exceptional suffering and misfortune 3. Possesses an inner flaw (weakness) 4. Conflict involves a violation of a moral or ethical law 5. Experiences a moment of self-awareness before his/her demise
